How It Works: 3 Simple Steps

At Mary Valley Pet Cremation, we believe the process of saying goodbye should be as seamless and comforting as possible. Here’s how our pet cremation service works:

Step 1: Choose a Cremation Package and Urn Option

The first step is to select the cremation package that best suits your needs. We offer three different package sizes based on the size of your pet:

Mini (up to 3 kg) – For small animals such as hamsters, rabbits, or tiny dogs and cats.

Medium (up to 20 kg) – Suitable for most cats and small-to-medium dogs.

Large (up to 50 kg) – For larger pets that require a more robust package.

Once you’ve chosen the appropriate package, you can also decide whether you’d like to upgrade the Scatter tube arrangement to one of our elegant wooden or brass pet cremation urns.

Step 2: Schedule the Collection

When the time is right, contact us to schedule your pet's collection. We will come to your home or vet clinic at a time that suits you. If you’d like, you can introduce us to your pet, share their story, or take a few moments in silence. We are here to respect your wishes, and we will stay as long as you need during this difficult moment.

Our collection process is handled with the utmost care and respect, ensuring your pet’s dignity is preserved.

Step 3: Return of Ashes and Memorialisation

After the individual cremation, we return your pet’s ashes to your home or vet clinic. You can choose whether the ashes are delivered in the Basic Cremation Package Scatter Tube arrangement, or in one of our upgraded pet cremation urns. Additionally, you will receive a cremation certificate, a paw print, a lock of fur, and a name tag to remember your pet by.

For those who wish to memorialise their pet further, we offer a free memorial page on our website where you can share stories, photos, and memories of your beloved companion.

Why Choosing the Right Urn Matters

Selecting a cremation urn for your pet is more than just a final decision—it’s a way to honour their life and keep their memory alive in a meaningful way. An urn serves as a tribute to the love and companionship shared, offering a physical reminder of the joy your pet brought into your home. Whether you choose a simple design or a more decorative piece, the right urn provides comfort and a sense of closeness.

Different Types of Pet Cremation Urns Explained

Pet cremation urns come in various styles, materials, and finishes, each offering a unique way to preserve your pet’s ashes. Here’s an overview of the options available:

  • Wooden Urns – Handcrafted and natural, wooden urns offer warmth and organic beauty. They can be personalised with engravings, photo slots, or nameplates.
  • Brass Urns – Elegant and durable, brass urns provide a classic, timeless tribute. Many feature intricate designs and secure lids for lasting protection.
  • Ceramic Urns – These urns offer artistic and delicate designs, often featuring hand-painted details.
  • Customised Urns – Some pet owners prefer fully customised urns that reflect their pet’s unique personality, incorporating colours, inscriptions, or even pet portraits.

Memorial Ideas to Keep Your Pet’s Memory Alive

While an urn provides a place for your pet’s ashes, many owners seek additional ways to honour their pet’s memory. Here are some ideas to create a lasting tribute:

  • Memory Box – Store cherished mementos such as their collar, favourite toy, or photographs alongside their ashes.
  • Personalised Plaque – Place an engraved plaque near their urn to include their name, significant dates, and a heartfelt message.
  • Plant a Living Memorial – Some families choose to plant a tree or flowers near their pet’s resting place, symbolising growth and renewal.
  • Shadow Box Display – Create a display with their urn, paw print, and special keepsakes as a dedicated space for remembrance.
  • Jewellery Keepsakes – A small portion of ashes can be placed into a piece of jewellery, such as a locket or bracelet, allowing you to keep them close wherever you go.

How to Choose the Right Size Urn for Your Pet

Choosing the correct size urn ensures that your pet’s ashes are properly contained. The general rule of thumb is that 1 cubic inch of urn space is needed per 1 pound (0.45 kg) of body weight. To help, here’s a simple guide:

  • Mini Urn (Up to 3kg) – Ideal for smaller pets such as birds, hamsters, rabbits, or tiny cats and dogs.
  • Small Urn (Up to 10kg) – Suitable for smaller breeds of cats and dogs.
  • Medium Urn (Up to 20kg) – Designed for most medium-sized dogs and larger cats.
  • Large Urn (Up to 50kg) – Best for large dog breeds or multiple smaller pets if owners wish to keep them together.
The Emotional Significance of a Pet Cremation Urn
Losing a pet is an emotional journey, and having a cremation urn provides a way to process grief while keeping their presence close. For many, the urn represents more than just a resting place—it’s a tangible connection to the love, joy, and companionship that defined their relationship. Placing the urn in a special location, lighting a candle nearby, or simply touching it during moments of reflection can provide comfort and healing.
How to Involve Family Members in Choosing an Urn
Selecting an urn is a deeply personal decision, and involving family members—especially children—can help in the healing process. Consider these approaches:
    • Discuss Preferences – Talk as a family about what best represents your pet. Would they suit a rustic wooden urn, a classic brass design, or something more decorative?
    • Let Children Participate – If you have young children, they may appreciate choosing an inscription or helping to select a special place for the urn at home.
    • Create a Small Ceremony – Once the urn arrives, gather together for a private remembrance moment, allowing each person to share a story or memory about your pet.

      Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best material for a pet cremation urn?
The best material depends on your personal preference and where you plan to keep the urn. Wooden urns provide a natural and warm look, brass urns are durable and elegant, while ceramic urns offer an artistic touch. If you plan to keep the urn in an outdoor setting, we recommend choosing a more durable option like brass or stone.

Can I scatter some ashes and still keep a portion in an urn?
Absolutely. Many pet owners choose to scatter some of their pet’s ashes in a meaningful location while keeping a portion in an urn. You can also opt for keepsake jewellery or smaller urns if you wish to share ashes among family members.

      Are your urns customisable?
Yes. We offer personalisation options, including engraved nameplates, custom inscriptions, and urns with photo slots. If you have something specific in mind, let us know, and we’ll do our best to accommodate your request.

How do I care for my pet’s urn?
Caring for an urn depends on its material. Wooden urns should be kept away from direct sunlight and moisture, while brass urns can be polished occasionally to maintain their shine. If you have a ceramic urn, handle it with care to prevent accidental breakage.

Can I relocate my pet’s urn if I move house?
Yes. Many pet owners take their pet’s urn with them when relocating. If you have scattered some of their ashes in a garden or another special place, consider collecting a small portion before moving, or take photos of the site as a keepsake.
